INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: clients aren't hiring you for your skills
Clients hire you to fix a business problem.
Before talking about your process or portfolio, have you tried asking what pain they are eliminating? What result would they pay for?
Are they losing customers to better-designed competitors? Are manufacturing costs killing margins? Returns eating up profits? Is assembly too complex?
That's what they're paying you for. To fix a business problem costing them money or market position.
Most designers lead with capability. "Here's what I can do." But they don't care until they know you can fix their problem.
Frame the work around eliminating pain and delivering results they value. Then you stop being a freelancer they negotiate with and become a strategic partner they need.
Figure out the pain. Articulate the result. Show how your work delivers it.
Then you stop competing on price, and start commanding value.
