INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: customers buy function, they pay extra for a feeling

Two coffees deliver the same caffeine. One is a quick grab and go at a convenient gas station. The other is more than twice the price and you have to wait in line for it.

The difference is not just the coffee. It is every touchpoint around it. The cup, the lid, the sleeve, the ordering ritual, the handoff, the lighting, the way the space either tells you to slow down or keep moving.

Every physical interaction reinforces a promise before a single word of marketing ever reaches you. That is design doing its work. Not a logo applied after the fact. The system that makes a promise feel real every time a customer interacts with your product.

Many companies miss this. They treat brand as messaging and product as engineering. But your customers do not experience your brand through your website. They experience it the moment they touch your product, open the box, hold it in their hands.

If your product does not make the promise real in the first ten seconds of contact, your positioning is just words on a pitch deck.
