INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: engineers are not a substitute for industrial designers

One of the biggest misconceptions I still hear is that engineers can handle the design, then an industrial designer can make it look better at the end.

That isn’t industrial design. That’s decoration.

Engineering answers whether a product can be built. Industrial design asks whether it should be built that way in the first place. How someone understands it. How it feels to use. What it communicates before it’s ever turned on. How manufacturing, ergonomics, usability, cost, serviceability, and brand all come together into one coherent product.

The best products aren’t engineered first and styled later. They’re developed by engineering and industrial design together from the beginning, each solving problems the other was never trained to solve.
