INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: Expressed Functionalism
For years, minimalism has meant hiding everything. Smoothing it out, cleaning it up, reducing the visual noise until the product feels inevitable.
That still has value, I’m not arguing against it. But lately I keep seeing something different, and I’m curious to get the ID community’s take on it.
These products that still feel restrained, still feel resolved, but bring the meaningful functional elements forward instead of burying them. Controls that look like controls. Interfaces that show what the device actually does. Components with real jobs becoming part of the aesthetic instead of something to hide behind a polished shell.
I don’t know how much longevity this design language has, or if it’s just a small swing away from a sea of sameness.
Either way, it’s interesting. And I think we’re going to see a lot more of it.
