INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ISN’T A CAREER, IT’S A WAY OF THINKING

Yesterday I posted about what we’re supposed to tell design students right now. The honest answer? It’s complicated.

The traditional ID path is shifting, shrinking even. Fewer roles. More uncertainty. And a lot of great designers stuck in limbo.

But here’s what I learned from the comments on that post:

Industrial Design has never just been a job. It’s a way of seeing. A way of solving. A way of reshaping the world around you.

It teaches pattern recognition. Systems thinking. Empathy in action.

It gives you the tools to make ideas real,

not just in product development, but in startups, strategy, innovation, branding, storytelling, even policy.

The title might vanish. But the thinking is hard to kill.

Call it design. Call it something else.

But we were born to make.

And we’ll keep making, with whatever’s in front of us.

That’s not a career. That’s a designer.
