INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: safe choices lead to commodity products

If you want to avoid every risk, get comfortable competing on price. That is where products end up when every decision has to be proven before anyone will make it.

The easiest things to defend are the easiest to measure. Cost, feature count, speed, and specs feel safe because they give people numbers to hide behind.

Category-leading products come from the gray area where data is incomplete, the idea is not fully proven, and someone has to use judgment before the spreadsheet confirms it.

That means accepting that trust, desire, perceived quality, and loyalty are harder to measure early and easier to lose later.

If you only make choices everyone can defend in advance, you get the product everyone else already knows how to make.

Safe products get compared. Loved products get chosen, kept, touched, recommended, and bought again.
