INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: stop calling in design to clean up your mess

Too many companies still bring design in like someone calling a contractor after the house is already framed, wired, painted, but somehow facing the wrong direction. At that point, yes, design can help, but it is not magic.

Product direction is set. Business assumptions are baked in. Engineering has momentum. Everyone has a reason the decisions made sense at the time. Then design gets asked to clean up a situation it did not help shape.

The problem is rarely one terrible decision. It is a stack of reasonable ones. Each choice sounds fine in isolation, but together they point the product somewhere nobody meant to go.

That is where experienced industrial design creates the most value. Earlier, when the team is still deciding what the thing should become across product direction, user experience, physical form, brand fit, and manufacturing reality. That is judgment, not decoration.
