INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: the most expensive mistake isn’t a bad product

It’s a good product for a problem nobody has. I’ve seen too many teams make this common mistake.

They fall in love with a capability. The tech is real, the engineering is impressive, the execution is clean. Then the scramble starts to make it sound necessary. The need gets reverse engineered to justify the solution that already exists.

It can look like research. It uses the right vocabulary. But the conclusion was decided before the first interview. With a vague problem statement but the solution is extremely specific.

Real need finding flips that. The problem is sharp enough to hurt. The solution stays flexible until you confirm the pain is real, frequent, and people are willing to pay to get rid of it.

You can polish the UI, tighten the tolerances, and ship on time, and still lose because you built an answer to a question nobody asked.
