INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS aren’t made. They’re born.
——— Not in the “gifted genius” way. But in the, my brain doesn’t work like everyone else’s and I’ve spent years trying to make that okay, kind of way.
A lot of the best industrial designers I know share something in common. Not a degree. Not a title. Not even a portfolio style.
What they share is how they think.
Restless.
Observant. Pattern-sensitive. Obsessed with fixing what’s broken, even if no one asked them to. Quietly driven to make the world feel more intuitive.
Neurodivergence is often at the core of that.
It’s the blessing that powers the creativity. And the curse that makes you wonder if you belong.
Whatever flavor of “I can’t stop thinking about this” runs through your wiring, it’s not a bug. It’s a feature.
And learning to see it that way? That’s a defining moment.
Because once you realize your brain isn’t broken, it’s just built differently, you stop trying to be a different kind of designer.
And you start becoming a great one.
So if you’ve ever felt like you’re too much, too intense, too scattered, or too deep in your head.
You’re not broken. You were born for this.
And you’re better off because of it.
Because the world needs your creative spark.
Now more than ever.
