INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: brand or specs, who wins?

That Wired blind test of headphones that I posted about yesterday exposed something most companies refuse to admit. When you strip away the logo, even experts can't tell which product is "supposed" to win. Soundcore beat Sony, Apple, and Bose because in that moment, brand equity was worth zero.

But here's the other side. A speaker I helped design for Griffin Technology years ago that destroyed Bose in every user test. Better sound, better build quality, better price, better overall

experience. It failed in the market because Bose owned the perception. People bought the brand they trusted over the product that performed better.

The lesson isn't that experience beats brand or brand beats experience. It's that you need both working together, and most companies only invest in one. Strong brands with weak products get disrupted. Great products with no brand die in obscurity.

Product design is where these two actually connect. The form language, material choices, and interaction details are what make a product feel like it belongs to a brand worth trusting. That's not marketing's job, that's ours.

At Crafted by, we build products that earn brand equity through experience, then work in tandem with Marketing to sell that message. If you're competing on specs alone or coasting on legacy reputation, neither strategy is safe anymore.
