INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: feelings shape experience more than specs do
Most companies optimize for what they can measure. That’s the system. But people don’t experience products through data. They respond to trust, hesitation, friction. Things that don’t show up on a spreadsheet.
It’s like a weather report. The temperature might be 85, but the heat index makes it feel like 102. The number is technically correct, but it doesn’t help you decide what to wear.
Design works the same way. Specs tell one story. The experience tells another. Users believe what they feel.
Designers spend a lot of time turning that feeling into something the business can debate. But the more strategic move is reshaping what the business values in the first place. If the metric ignores the human response, it’s not the right metric.
