INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: good design is often ignored

When a door needs a sign that says push, it’s already failed. The handle told you to pull. The surface told you to push. That mismatch forces the brain to think about the interface instead of using it.

The best design doesn’t fight for attention, it gets out of the way. A push plate, a recessed grip, or a soft contour all communicate intent without language. They let the user move through an experience without hesitation.

That’s the job. To build affordances so natural that users stop thinking about the product and start thinking through it.

When design does its job, it disappears. When it doesn’t, it becomes all you can see.
