INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: good execution beats good materials

Premium materials used to mean quality. Now they just signal conformity. Thin aluminum sounds hollow. Uncoated glass smudges instantly. Poorly chosen leather doesn’t wear well. All it does is expose how little time you spent on execution.

Instead, try using humble materials. Then obsess over every detail - perfect transitions, well balanced textures, tolerances dialed in.

That’s what users actually respond to. Not the material, but the precision.

The catch is it takes more design time, tighter control, and better manufacturing. But the payoff is differentiation that can’t be copied by just spending more.
