INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: haptic feedback is the designer's cheat code
When you can't make something physically click, you make it feel like it did. PlayStation's DualSense triggers, Apple's Taptic Engine, even your phone's keyboard. None of them are actually moving the way your brain thinks they are. It's smoke and mirrors, but it works because our brains fill in the gaps.
The trick is timing. Haptic feedback has to arrive within 10-20 milliseconds of the visual change or your brain rejects it as fake. Too late and it feels laggy. Too early and it feels disconnected. Microsoft learned this the hard way with early Surface devices, the haptic and visual weren't synced and reviews called it "mushy."
This matters because as we move away from physical buttons toward touch interfaces, haptic feedback is how we prove the interaction happened. It's the handshake between human and
machine. Without it, even the best visual design feels lifeless. Get the timing right and people trust the device. Get it wrong and they question everything.
