INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: if you don't understand marketing, you're not as valuable as you think

Designing a great product is only half the job. The other half is getting people to buy it.

Marketing isn’t decoration. It’s customer strategy. It’s who you’re designing for, why they’ll care, and most importantly how they’ll find it.

Design programs skip this. You learn form, function, materials. Almost nothing about how products reach customers or why some sell. Designers who understand marketing aren't stylists. They're strategic partners thinking beyond the object.

I’m kicking off a series here this week that covers what's missing. What marketing is, why it matters early, how it makes you valuable.

Wondered why your best designs didn't get built or less talented designers get more opportunities? Let’s talk about it.

7-Day Series Index (for reader context):

1. Why marketing matters to industrial designers 2. What marketing actually is (and isn’t) 3. Marketing vs sales vs product 4. Why design and marketing must partner early 5. Company brand vs personal brand 6. How to build a personal brand without selling out 7. The myth of “if you build it, they will come”
