INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: management isn’t a promotion, it’s a different profession
Only 1% of designers successfully shift from individual contributor to manager. Not because they lack talent, but because they’re naturally wired for the opposite work.
Design rewards deep focus, solo flow, thinking through making. Management punishes all of that. It demands real-time reaction, political awareness, comfort with conflict, and endless context switching.
The industry treats it like a natural next step, but it’s not.
It’s a forced career pivot with no training and no off-ramp. Most take it because it’s the only way to earn more or gain influence. Many quit within a few years. The rest often hate it. They operate burned out, frustrated, and removed from the work that made them great, that they loved.
Maybe the real question isn’t why designers struggle with management, but why we keep designing careers this way.
