INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: stop hiding behind “sustainable.”
Too many companies today lean on sustainability as marketing language instead of real change. They highlight the packaging made from recycled fiber, while the rest of the product is disposable junk. They brag about switching to a “greener” material, while still producing single-use items that never should have existed in the first place.
This kind of virtue signaling does more harm than good. It makes the word “sustainable” meaningless, and it teaches customers to be skeptical of every claim that follows. Real impact does not come from a label. It comes from hard decisions about what gets made, how it is used, and whether it should exist at all.
So, what has been successful for you when pushing for real impact on your projects?
