INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: what am I up to?
I get this question a lot so I figured I’d write about it.
Close to 400 designer conversations this year taught me we're not okay.
We're isolated, working alone, doubting our decisions. That isolation has killed our confidence. When you haven't talked to another designer in months, it gets harder to speak with authority. Harder to push back. Harder to make the case for why design matters.
That's when our value gets diluted. Not because we're worse, because we've lost the confidence that comes from knowing we're not alone.
So I'm rebuilding it. Calls, meetups in Atlanta, mentoring, group discussions. Everything I can to bring us back together.
This started as business development. It became a mission. And I can’t do it alone…
