INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: why “they” just don’t get it

You’re designing for loyalty, longevity, and trust. They’re optimizing for this quarter’s numbers. That’s the tension.

You want better materials, thoughtful details, long-term value. They want cheaper parts, faster timelines, short-term wins. And too often, you lose. Not because you're wrong, but because you're speaking the wrong language.

Saying “this builds loyalty” won’t land. But say “this reduces churn and increases repeat purchase margin in year three,” and now it’s a business case.

They don’t get it because we don’t frame it clearly. The goal should be building a brand customers trust, not just cost savings. That only happens by impressing them again and again. That’s how companies actually win.

Good design isn’t expensive, it’s just slow ROI. Speak their terms. Win the argument.
