Why We Don’t Sell Solutions on Day 1

Clients are always shocked when I don’t start with ideas.

A few weeks ago, a new client came in hot, “Sketch something. Show us your ideas. Let’s move fast.”

I pushed back. Told them we’d be spending the first two weeks asking questions, mapping assumptions, and not sketching anything.

They looked confused. Almost insulted.

But here’s what happened next:

We uncovered a misalignment between their leadership team and their product roadmap. We identified a false user need baked into their research. We found a major tooling decision they didn’t need to make.

And we hadn’t even touched a pencil.

That’s why I don’t sell “design” on day one. I sell clarity. Because if we solve the wrong problem beautifully, it’s still the wrong problem.

It’s okay to slow the process down if it protects the outcome.
