INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: how to make motion part of the interface

———​ I saw a tech podcast recently mention Apple’s upcoming HomePod-style device with an iPad-like screen on a moving arm. A device that could turn toward you, follow you during a call, or physically respond to you.

That sounds strange until you connect it to Apple’s ELEGNT research project, where they built a lamp-like robot and tested expressive motion against purely functional movement. Yes Apple built a real life Pixar lamp. But the interesting part was not that the lamp moved, rather that the movement changed how people read the object.

That is the bigger point for any products that are self actuating. Once a product moves, motion becomes part of the interface. It is no longer just about getting the screen into position or pointing a camera at the user.

The product has to show intent. Does it know I am here? Is it listening, waiting, confused, following, done, or about to move? People read those answers through timing, speed, hesitation, orientation, and posture before they read any icon on a screen.

That is why motion design in physical products cannot be treated like a gimmick. If artificial objects are going to share space with people, they have to move in ways people can understand.
