INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: how to set the standard in your category
——— I recently learned a brilliant marketing concept called “narrative monopoly.” A strong brand does not explain why its product is better. It reframes the whole conversation and teaches people how to evaluate the category.
Here’s how it goes. First, define what matters. Then teach people how to shop for it. Finally, repeat that point of view until it becomes the default way people judge the space.
Apple reframed the value of their products around creativity rather than productivity. They changed the comparison from components to belonging.
As an example let’s say you were building a humanoid robotics product. You start by saying it's not about speed, payload, battery life, or technical specs alone. Then reframe the category around trust, safety, human comfort, and how naturally your robot fits into their environment.
Then you teach people what to look for. Does it move predictably, communicate intent clearly, feel safe to work near, and reduce effort without creating new workarounds?
Repeat the perspective over and over until it becomes the standard. Now every other product gets judged against your strengths.
Don’t just tell people your product is good. Teach them what good should mean.
