INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: they teach you how to add more, you have to teach yourself how to add less

It does not come naturally. The instinct is to fill every surface, every screen, every form, every feature. Not because the work needs it, but because empty space feels like a gap in your thinking, like you did not do enough.

It is not laziness. It is anxiety. Both produce the same result.

The space is not passive. It is defining proportion, creating hierarchy, giving the eye somewhere to rest. Remove it and the design loses its shape. The same is true of a product. More features is not more value, just more friction.

The best work knows what it is trying to say and removes everything in the way with precision. And it requires a completely different kind of confidence.

Restraint can be the hardest lesson to learn. It just takes practice.
