INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: playing it safe isn't the same as reducing risk
If the plan is to compete on price and features, the established playbook is enough. But if you want fresh thinking and a stronger market position, the old playbook may be the problem.
Too many companies say they want innovation, then look for people trained inside the same assumptions, benchmarks, buyer expectations, and safe moves. It feels like reducing risk, but it just makes another version of what already exists.
The expertise that got you here starts working against you. The category teaches people what to notice, but also what to stop questioning. So they compete inside the same pattern, the same forms and features with slightly better execution.
A good outside partner sees what insiders have learned to ignore. That is the difference between polishing what exists and moving the category forward.
