INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: sales is not a dirty word

Most designers make selling harder than it needs to be. They lead with capabilities, process, and portfolios before understanding what the other person needs.

The right approach is just conversation and curiosity. Ask what's stuck. What's it costing them? What have they tried? What happens if nothing changes? What does success look like?

Then repeat it back. You told me your launch is slipping, engineering is waiting on decisions, and customers don't understand the product.

Now you aren't selling anymore. You're showing how your work solves problems they just described. If it doesn't solve them, don't force it, tell them. Interviews work the same way.

This isn't technique. It's honesty about what you see, openness about what you can't fix, and a real desire to help whether it turns into work or not. People feel the difference and remember.
