INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: what it is and why it matters

I meet a lot of people, especially technical founders, who understand engineering well but are still unclear on what industrial design actually does and when it should show up. A lot of them assume it is just styling. It is not.

Think about something as familiar as a Keurig. Mechanical engineering makes the product function and hold together in the real world. Water flow, sealing, structure, durability, assembly, and manufacturability all live there. Electrical engineering handles the electronic system behind the experience, including power, heating, sensing, controls,

safety, board architecture, and compliance. UI design covers the digital layer: indicators, screen flows, feedback, and interaction logic.

Industrial design shapes the physical product experience. It helps define how the product is understood, used, loaded, cleaned, stored, and perceived. On the technical side, it drives decisions around product architecture, layout, human factors, control placement, packaging, and CMF (Color / Material / Finish).

That matters because someone has to keep the product anchored to the customer while everything else pushes toward technical feasibility. That is often where industrial design brings the most value.
