INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: who decides if the design is bold or boring

It shifts with the product, the company, and the customer’s appetite for risk. Sometimes safe design is smart. Other times it’s completely forgettable. But design isn’t just engineering or pure art, it’s the negotiation between them.

Safe design solves the problem and disappears. Standout design grabs attention, even before it explains itself. Neither is right by default. But if you live at either extreme, you’re no longer doing industrial design. You’re building tools or making sculptures.

The job is balancing both. Enough function to deliver, enough emotion to attract. But here’s the thing that many designers don’t understand, that balance isn’t yours to define,

it’s yours to discover. You have to find out what the audience needs. Medical buyers want reassurance. Lifestyle buyers want desire. Your job is to read the appetite and deliver accordingly. That’s the actual skill. Go talk to some people.
