INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: being good at everything is holding you back

———​ When you're great at many things, it doesn’t make you stand out. It makes you harder to define.

People can see that you're talented, but they don’t know what to come to you for. You become the person who can help with anything, which often means you're not the first choice for anything.

It feels good in the short term. You get pulled into more meetings, more projects, more decisions. But slowly, you become the support structure for everyone else’s priorities.

Capability without clarity is a trap. You spend your time solving the wrong problems. You take on work you never meant to be known for. You say yes because you can, not because you should.

The outside world calls it versatility. Inside, it starts to feel like erosion.

This isn’t a question of skill. It’s a question of positioning. And positioning is a choice.

You don’t need to prove that you can do everything. You need to show people what you are for.
