INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: big clients aren’t price shopping, they’re certainty shopping
Big clients aren't choosing between you and someone cheaper. They're choosing between certainty and risk.
The person hiring you isn't spending their own money. They're spending budget tied to brand reputation, revenue targets, and production timelines. If the work fails, they're the one answering for it.
That's why a freelancer charging $150 an hour can lose the job to someone charging $350. Not because the work is better. Because the higher-priced option feels safer. They've done it before. They've worked with recognizable brands. They don't need hand-holding.
Fortune 500 companies don't hire elite firms at $600/hour for fun. They're buying protection. A botched launch means millions in tooling waste. A recall costs exponentially more. The CFO isn't asking how to get it done cheaper. They're asking how to make sure it doesn't fail.
If you think that freelancing is all about competing on price, then you're playing the wrong game. The client is buying certainty.
So stop trying to look affordable. Start showing that you know what's at stake, and that you've solved it before.
That's what gets you in the room. That's what gets you the job.
