INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: what hundreds of you told me that you won't post online

After talking to literally hundreds of industrial designers last year, I sat down to record a podcast with Peter Boeckel and air out what I’d learned.

Here’s some of the stuff that doesn't make LinkedIn: you feel isolated even on teams, identity crisis is real when craft gets automated, schools are businesses selling dreams instead of market prep.

The gap between education and reality is widening. You're learning rendering when the industry needs communication. Perfecting images when portfolios should show thinking. Waiting for design to be valued instead of selling it. The actual skill gap isn't CAD or sketching, it's talking to and learning from people outside design.

Some recommended fixes: Go find your own 300 people to talk to this year. Learn budgets, timelines, constraints. Show process in portfolio. The only craft AI can't replace is human connection.
