INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: build trust, not transactions
The best designer/client relationships aren't transactions, they're creative partnerships. When potential clients immediately jump into budget and timeline without understanding the problem being solved, it's usually a signal that the project won't reach its potential.
Great design work requires trust from both sides. Designers need to understand not just what you want built, but why it matters to your business and customers. Clients need to trust their design team will push back when something isn't working, even if it means uncomfortable conversations.
The most successful projects happen when clients treat their design partners like collaborators, not vendors. They share context, welcome questions, and understand that good design is iterative. They know that rushing to a "final" concept usually means backtracking later.
This approach requires selectivity on both sides. When there's mutual respect and shared investment in the outcome, the work becomes something everyone's proud of. Without that alignment, you're both wasting time and money.
If you're hiring a design team to simply execute your exact vision, you're missing the real value. The magic happens when you find partners who'll help you build something better than what you initially imagined.
