INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: details separate products from objects

A button that clicks with purpose feels designed. A button with no tactile feedback feels uncertain. A cable that routes through a channel feels thoughtful. The same cable loose feels like an afterthought. Details don't just improve function, they communicate intent.

Great brands are built on this premise. Products that obsess over details nobody consciously notices. But collectively they signal "someone thought about this." That feeling compounds into preference.

Things like button travel and resistance, cable routing and termination, edge treatments and transitions, indicator placement and color, connector orientation and friction, are the types of details worth obsessing over. None of these change what the product does. More importantly, all of them change how users feel about it.

Take the time to execute every detail perfectly. Make them feel inevitable, as if that was the only way it could have been done. Not every one will likely make it through the development process. But the ones that do, those are the ones that users will fall in love with.
