INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: here’s why you can't get a job

The last five years broke the pipeline. Pandemic shutdowns, then supply chain chaos, then inflation, now tariffs strangling trade. Each hit knocked companies further into defensive mode. Hiring froze. Product development slowed. Design teams got lean.

Meanwhile, design schools kept running at full capacity. They're still graduating the same number of industrial designers every year. So the math is straightforward: fewer jobs, way more people competing for them. The ratio just keeps getting worse.

This isn't about your portfolio quality or your skills. The market fundamentally changed. Companies that were hiring three designers a year are now hiring one, or none. Studios that used to bring on junior talent are only looking for seniors who can bill immediately.

You're competing against people with five years of experience who also can't find work. The whole ladder is jammed.​ ​ It’s going to take some time to reboot the system. So be patient, stay positive, keep learning and growing.
