INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: learn to shift focus

In my experience, one of the hardest parts of design isn’t the tools or the sketching. It’s knowing when to zoom in, and when to zoom out.

Zoom in, and you’re buried in surface breaks, fasteners, and subtle details that quietly shape the product. Zoom out, and you’re weighing market fit, pricing, and whether the whole idea makes sense at all.

Stay too close and you risk obsessing over things no one notices. Stay too far and you miss flaws that could sink the work.

The real challenge is moving fluidly between the two, balancing and weighing them against each other.

Seeing both the forest and the trees without getting stuck in either view.

And knowing when to give in one area to gain in the other.

That’s the real trick.
