INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: no one is asking for perfect

I don’t design to impress clients. I design to avoid the shame of knowing I could’ve done better. It’s a quiet pressure many of us live with — not asked for, not paid for, but deeply felt.

We push past what’s scoped, chasing an internal standard that won’t let us walk away. It feels like integrity. But sometimes I wonder if it’s something else.

If no one’s asking us to care this much, are we just burning ourselves out for nothing? And worse — are we training the world to expect over-delivery without compensation?

This isn’t about lowering the bar. It’s about protecting the people behind the work. Including us.
