INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: “we don’t have budget” means someone else won
You know business language matters. You know intuition without evidence loses. But you think "no budget" ends the conversation. It means you haven't made your work more important than what has that budget.
Resources aren't scarce, priorities are. Someone else made a better case. Manufacturing made not retooling a risk. Marketing framed timing as critical. You can’t argue aesthetics while everyone else argues risk and margin.
The translation layer isn't just for defending decisions, it's for getting resources. "Better materials" loses to "cheaper materials create warranty exposure costing $X per unit."
Use business cases before budget meetings, not after being told no. Show why your work reduces their risks.
The work you won't fight for doesn't get built. It just dies polite.
