INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: why companies need both industrial design and mechanical engineering

Hardware founders often treat industrial design and mechanical engineering as variations of the same job. They are not.

Engineers solve technical constraints. Make mechanisms reliable, manage thermal loads, optimize performance within physical laws.

Designers solve market constraints. Why would someone pay for this instead of what exists? Does it solve a problem people have? What manufacturing process hits the price people will pay? How does the product communicate value?

A brilliant engineer can build something technically perfect nobody wants. A talented designer who doesn't understand manufacturing creates beautiful concepts that cost three times the viable price.

This is the gap where many hardware startups die. Not because engineering failed, but because nobody connected technical capability to market reality early enough.

Treating design as decoration means making commercial decisions without the right expertise in the room. You can’t just slap some styling on a product whose commercial viability was never validated.
