WHAT IF NOBODY NEEDS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ANYMORE?
If design is being outsourced,
automated,
absorbed into UX,
flattened into strategy decks…
If the work’s getting cheaper,
the timelines shorter,
the expectations higher,
Is there anything left for us who are still in the game?
What happens to the industrial designers
who still sketch by hand?
Who still sweat the curve?
Who still believe in objects that tell a story?
And who are too passionate, and stubborn to quit?
It’s a quiet fear I keep hearing.
And one I’ve felt too.
But here’s the truth: It’s not enough to make beautiful things anymore.
We have to sell the value of design. Tell better stories. Speak to the boardroom, not just the shop floor. Tie our work to real outcomes.
Because no one is coming to fix this. Not the execs. Not the clients. Not the industry associations.
If we want things to change, we’re going to have to make that change ourselves. Fight for design. Not with opinions, but with strategy. With business fluency. With leadership.
Because industrial design still matters. But only if we make it matter.
