INDUSTRIAL DESIGN: hardware is the new software

For a decade the smart money chased software. Cheap to build, fast to ship, easy to scale. It earned every dollar. But AI changed the math. The barrier to building an app didn't get lower, it disappeared. Anyone with a subscription can clone a product in an afternoon. When everyone can build it, no one can defend it.

Hardware is the opposite. It stacks sourcing, tooling, manufacturing, logistics, compliance, and margin pressure on top of the experience. Every one is a place to fail. That difficulty is the moat, and it's why you can't fake it.

The knockoffs prove it. Copies flood in after success, but they can't copy what isn't in the object. Brand trust, distribution, support, the next iterations, the relationships that earn better tooling. The knockoff is a snapshot. The real business is a moving target.

The real problems are physical again. If you build real things, this is your moment. Go make something worth copying.
