INDUSTRIAL DESIGNERS: no one understands what you actually do
You make things real. And no one sees that.
They think it's making things look pretty. That’s if they even know what industrial design is at all. Hell, your own parents probably don't know what you do. And I'm going to lose it if one more person asks me if I design factories.
But it's not that. It's staying up late making a detail work without looking like garbage, hoping to watch it put a smile on a stranger's face someday.
It's knowing what 0.2mm too much plastic feels like. It's spending two weeks making a part feel effortless, so the user never notices it at all.
You live between mass production and taste. Between finance and physics. Between what marketing promises and what can actually be built. And when you do it right, it disappears.
You translate chaos into form. And no one claps for that.
That’s the trade. You’re not here to be noticed. You’re here to make things that just work.
So let them keep guessing. You know what it took. And that’s all that matters.
